A veteran of tuning, repairing and reconditioning pianos
for 38 years, John Woodruff successfully passed all
requirements and testing for Registered Piano Technician
status with the Piano Technicians Guild in 1979. In 1986,
as treasurer of the New York City chapter of the Guild,
he helped run the New York State convention. From
1990 to 1996 he was an associate technician at The
Manhattan School of Music. And from 1992 to 2008 he
was Chief Technician at The Bard School of Music and
from its inception in 2004 to 2008, The Conservatory of
Music at Bard College. Retiring to private clients only,
Mr. Woodruff currently continues maintaining instruments
up and down the Hudson Valley from the town of Hudson
region to the New York metropolitan area. Among his
specialties, Mr. Woodruff is an expert hammer voicer and
along with the standard equal temperament tuning, he
also offers historical tunings, among them Pietro Aaron’s
Meantone Temperament of 1523 and Thomas Young’s
Well Temperament of 1799.
